Letter from the UA Peace Corps Coverdell Fellows:

Peace Corps Week commemorates President John F. Kennedy’s establishment of the agency on March 1, 1961, and celebrates all the ways that Peace Corps makes a difference at home and abroad.  All 52 active Peace Corps Fellows at the UA, approximately 75 alumni, faculty and staff, and members of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Southern Arizona, as well as community partners are encouraged to participate.

This year the main event that we are hosting an Outreach Showcase + Research focusing on how Coverdell Fellows have brought the Peace Corps experience back home and how they have contributed to the academic and broader community, providing benefit to underserved communities. Participants will display their research and community outreach experience with posters and selected presentations with discussions with community participants and other RPCVs.

Fellows have been working with their outreach assistantship or research sites to document community needs, the goals and efforts of the groups they work with and what they have been able to carry out at the site. This work will focus on issues in our diverse community, including projects with refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, ESL learners, water issues and much more.

Fellows and RPCVs will still be able to share their Peace Corps experiences at the event and through talks in their classes and in the community.  We encourage all RPCVs to invite friends, family and colleagues to attend. We will provide information for attendees to spark discussions of Peace Corps through international and local topics of interest.

Our Impact Since 2000, 385 Peace Corps Fellows have matriculated at the UA. Fellows have been awarded 330 master’s degrees, 32 doctoral degrees, and 70 national fellowships. We have contributed over 400,000 hours of community service with 150 partner agencies from 2000 to May 2017. With 52 current Fellows, we remain one of the largest and well respected programs in the country.

Our partnership with Desert Doves Coverdell Fellows are asked to attend at least two meetings of Desert Doves each year and to volunteer for at least one Fourth Avenue Street Fair fundraiser. We help to sell the Peace Corps calendars and notecards on campus and through our alumni network. We believe that the interaction of RPCVs who have served in countries no longer available to Fellows strengthens our understanding of the world and our ability to carry out the Third Goal of Peace Corps.

Get Involved Peace Corps Week is a key opportunity for recruitment for U.S. Peace Corps and for local non-profit organizations. As a Fellows partner, we invite you to share your organizational mission and accomplishments by hosting a table or with a poster, by serving as a community poster judge or discussant, participating on a panel, giving talks in the community or otherwise supporting the Peace Corps recruiter, or through any of the other suggested opportunities presented by Peace Corps.
